This position will be for the 2025/2026 School Year
HOPE Community Academy is an accredited, public co-educational charter school comprised of primary, intermediate,
middle school, and high school levels. The entire school community seeks to provide a safe and trusting learning

Position Overview
The Building Substitute Teacher provides high-quality instruction and classroom management on both short-term and long-
term bases at HOPE Community Academy (K-12). This position requires flexibility to adapt to varying assignment durations based on daily school needs, from single-day coverage to extended placements.
Core Responsibilities
Instructional Planning & Delivery
Short-Term Assignments (1-5 days):
- Execute lesson plans left by the regular teacher with fidelity and maintain instructional momentum
- Follow established classroom routines and schedules precisely
- Complete detailed feedback forms regarding lesson completion and student engagement
Long-Term Assignments (6+ days): - Develop comprehensive lesson plans aligned with school curriculum standards and learning objectives
- Create and implement assessments to measure student progress
- Differentiate instruction to meet diverse learning needs and ability levels
- Integrate technology and multimedia resources to enhance learning
- Collaborate with grade-level teams to ensure alignment with pacing guides
Classroom Management & Student Behavior - Establish and maintain a positive, respectful, and culturally responsive learning environment
- Implement and enforce classroom rules, procedures, and behavioral expectations consistently
- Utilize the school’s discipline policies and behavioral management systems
- Address behavioral issues using proactive strategies; document and report significant incidents
- Implement individualized behavior plans for students with special needs
- Supervise students during transitions, lunch, recess, and non-instructional periods
- Maintain a safe and secure learning environment at all times
Student Assessment & Progress Monitoring
Short-Term: Administer scheduled assessments, grade daily work, monitor engagement, and document attendance
Long-Term:
- Develop and administer formative and summative assessments
- Maintain accurate gradebooks and student progress records
- Analyze assessment data to inform instructional decisions and identify students needing support
- Prepare progress reports and report cards as needed
Communication & Collaboration
With Students: Build positive relationships, communicate clear expectations, provide timely feedback, and foster an
inclusive environment
With Parents/Guardians: - Communicate student progress and concerns through emails, calls, and conferences
- Respond promptly to parent inquiries and clearly explain assessment criteria
- Involve families in supporting student learning
- Participate in parent-teacher conferences during long-term assignments
With Staff & Administration: - Collaborate with teachers, special education staff, paraprofessionals, and support personnel
- Attend and participate in team meetings, PLCs, and staff meetings
- Communicate regularly with administration regarding classroom needs
- Coordinate with specialists (ESL, Special Education, Title I) to support students
- Maintain communication with regular classroom teacher during long-term assignments
- Record Keeping & Administrative Duties
Daily: Take accurate attendance, complete substitute reports, and maintain confidentiality of student records
Long-Term: Maintain comprehensive lesson plans, detailed gradebooks, student performance records, required reports,
incident documentation, and submit all required documentation by deadlines
Professional Development & School Engagement - Attend mandatory staff development programs, training sessions, and curriculum meetings
- Engage in professional learning to improve instructional practices
- Maintain professional licensure requirements and continuing education
- Participate in school-wide events, assemblies, and extracurricular activities
- Support school initiatives related to Hmong language and culture
- Serve as a positive role model demonstrating professionalism and core values
- Attend family engagement events during long-term assignments
Special Responsibilities
Emergency & Safety:
- Know and implement all emergency protocols (fire drills, lockdowns, severe weather)
- Maintain knowledge of student emergency information and ensure student safety
Supervision & Coverage: - Supervise students during arrival, dismissal, lunch, and recess as assigned
- Accompany classes on field trips as needed
- Provide coverage for other teachers when requested
Technology: - Utilize learning management systems, student information systems, and communication platforms
- Operate classroom technology including interactive whiteboards, projectors, and tablets
- Troubleshoot basic technology issues and report problems promptly
Flexibility: - Adapt quickly to changing assignments across K-12 grade levels
- Accept day-to-day placement in various classrooms as needed
- Transition seamlessly between short-term and long-term assignments
- Respond to urgent staffing needs with professionalism
- Perform other duties as assigned by Principal or administrative staff
Assignment Duration Summary
Short-Term (1-5 days): Focus on continuity of instruction, following existing plans, maintaining routines, and
providing feedback to the regular teacher.
Long-Term (6+ days to full year): Assume full responsibilities of the classroom teacher including planning,
assessment, grading, parent communication, professional collaboration, and participation in all school duties.
The Building Substitute Teacher must be prepared to transition between short-term and long-term
responsibilities based on evolving school needs. Flexibility, adaptability, and commitment to student
success are essential.
Working Environment - Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; school building is a multi-level building that
has an elevator and is accessible - Position requires extensive interaction with children of all ages
- Duties may occasionally be performed on field trips away from school
- Duties may occasionally be performed in outdoor environments, such as athletic fields or playgrounds
- Duties may occasionally be performed in varying weather conditions, such as hot or cold weather.
- Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g. loud classrooms or cafeterias; children speaking or laughing
loudly).
