HOPE Community Academy is an accredited, public co-educational charter school comprised of
primary, intermediate, middle school, and high school levels. The entire school community seeks to

The Secondary Health Teacher is responsible to plan, organize and implement an appropriate
learning environment that guides and encourages secondary students (grades 6-12) to develop and
fulfill their academic potential in health education based on HOPE’s instructional curriculum. Work is
performed under the supervision of the principal.
Primary Duties
(These duties are a representative sample; position assignments may vary.)

  • Plan, prepare and deliver health education lesson plans and instructional materials that
    facilitate active learning in topics including physical health, mental and emotional wellness,
    nutrition, human development, disease prevention, substance abuse prevention, and personal
    safety
  • Instruct and monitor students in the use of health-related learning materials and equipment
  • Prepare classroom for health education activities and implement goals, objectives and
    standards of the school and state health education requirements
  • Use relevant technology to support and differentiate health instruction
  • Evaluate student performance through examinations, projects, presentations, and assignments
    to promote student achievement in health literacy. Provide appropriate feedback on work.
  • Identify student needs and cooperate with other professional staff members, including school
    nurses and counselors, in assessing and helping students address health, wellness, attitude, and
    learning concerns
  • Assess student academic and behavioral needs by establishing and enforcing school rules and
    procedures specific to health education settings
  • Communicate with parents through conferences and other means to discuss students’ progress
    in health education and interpret the school’s health curriculum
  • Clearly communicate assessment criteria to parents and involve parents/guardians in
    meaningful ways to maximize student learning and health awareness
  • Maintain accurate and complete records of students’ progress and development in health
    education
  • Prepare required reports on students and activities
  • Establish and maintain standards of student behavior needed to achieve a functional learning
    atmosphere in the health classroom
  • Perform classroom management duties and maintain discipline in accordance with the rules
    and disciplinary systems of the school
  • Create a safe, respectful environment for discussing sensitive health topics
    Professional Accountabilities
  • Maintain professional competence by attending staff development programs, health education
    workshops, curriculum development meetings and other professional activities
  • Stay current with adolescent health trends, research, and best practices in health education
  • Participate in various school events, staff meetings and extracurricular activities
  • Perform any other related duties as assigned by the Principal or other appropriate administrator
  • Serve as a role model for promoting healthy lifestyles, effective instruction and
    professionalism
  • Collaborate with school nurses, counselors, and community health organizations as appropriate
    Qualifications
  • B.A/B.S. degree in Health Education, Public Health, or related field from an accredited
    institution
  • Minnesota State Licensure in Health Education for grades 5-12 (or appropriate secondary
    teaching licensure)
  • Strong knowledge of adolescent health and development
  • Understanding of age-appropriate health education pedagogy and sensitive topics
  • Strong desire and commitment to working with diverse students and staff
  • Ability and flexibility to interact effectively with students, parents, and other school staff, the
    administration, and community members of diverse ethnic/racial and socioeconomic
    backgrounds
  • Ability to collaborate with grade level teachers, school health professionals, paraprofessionals,
    and community partners regarding health education
  • Ability to communicate effectively verbally and in writing, particularly regarding sensitive
    health topics
  • Knowledge of best practices in health education, instructional strategies, classroom
    management and behavior management
  • Ability to plan and implement lesson plans based on school goals, state health education
    standards, and the developmental needs of secondary students
  • Ability to adapt teaching styles to diverse student populations and learning needs
  • Ability to utilize computer and multimedia technology, as appropriate
  • Knowledge of classroom management and organization
  • Ability to create a safe, inclusive environment for discussing personal health topics


Working Environment

  • Duties are normally performed in a school/classroom environment; school building is a multi-
    level building that has an elevator and is accessible
  • Position requires extensive interaction with adolescent students (grades 6-12)
  • Duties may occasionally be performed on field trips away from school
  • Duties may occasionally be performed in outdoor environments, such as athletic fields or
    playgrounds
  • Duties may occasionally be performed in varying weather conditions, such as hot or cold
    weather
  • Possible exposure to loud and noisy locations (e.g. loud classrooms or cafeterias; students
    speaking or laughing loudly)
